DEN OUDE KASTANJE

Ecohoeve ‘DEN OUDE KASTANJE’ specialises in growing unusual and forgotten vegetables, herbs and soft fruits. Using small-scale, environmentally responsible methods, we grow less common vegetables that definitely deserve a place in your vegetable garden and on your plate.

By selling both planting material and immediately consumable vegetables, we strive to introduce the wider public to these unfamiliar delicacies. We are happy to do this with the necessary extra word of explanation. Through this site, we want to keep you informed about our experiences and give you a helping hand with our growing tips. We have also collected a few recipes so that you can get to work in the kitchen yourself with our vegetables and herbs. Through our Facebook page, we always keep you up to date with our latest news.

We opt for ecologically responsible and therefore small-scale business operations. We consider biodiversity important. Not purely in our diverse crops, but when designing the garden we also pay special attention to small landscape elements and microclimates. We work without pesticides or artificial fertilisers, with a focus on the soil and the existing natural values. Through management agreements (including the VLM bat project) and on our own initiative, we try to increase biodiversity in the garden. This provides us with unforgettable observations, even of highly endangered species such as the viviparous lizard, the middle spotted woodpecker, the sawfly Cimbex luteus, the butterfly Issoria lathonia and the extremely rare moth Drymonia velitaris.
