HEUCHERA/ TIARELLA/ AGAPANTHUS

Hostas & Zo specialised in … Hosta’s of course, but also in Heuchera’s and related species. In 2001, Dirk and Diane Scheys acquired the Hosta collection of Ignace van Doorslaer, thereby laying the foundations for their nursery. In the meantime, they maintain about 1,400 Hosta’s in the collection and 1,000 in the catalogue. Around a hundred varieties of Heuchera’s and Tiarella’s are available. And they now also have their own introductions.

In 2011 the family moved to Rety in France and took over the Agapanthus collection, also from Ignace van Doorslaer. Thus they continued under a new name: Pépinière des Deux Caps.

When we think of hostas, we naturally think of plants from the Far East. Today, however, most varieties are imported from the USA, but all wild species, which are the ancestors of modern hostas, come from the Far East, notably Japan as well as China and Korea.

The first Hosta to reach Europe, around 1785, was Hosta plantaginea from China. This species has been a garden plant in China and Japan for at least ten centuries, particularly prized for its large fragrant flowers. All fragrant Hostas are descended from Hosta plantaginea.

From 1829, Von Siebold brought many Japanese hostas to the Netherlands and Belgium, thereby laying the foundation for the wonderful range that Dirk and Diane can show you today.

Also coming from the far East Tiarella polyphylla particularly from East Asia. Cultivars such as Tiarella ‘Filigran’ and Tiarella ‘Moorgrun’ are derived from this Tiarella species.

Pép. de Deux Caps has also been offering plants from their new Agapanthus coll. for a few years now.

In 2025, Hosta is to be phased out of their collection and they will focus on the other plants in their collection.

They present their Grower's choice in 2025 :

Heucherella ‘Keith Haring’

This introduction to their own breeding work stands out for its bushy habit and excellent winter hardiness. Striking bicoloured foliage that is very deeply lobed and even develops extensions (extra leaflets on the leaves). Also grows larger than most other Heucherellas.

Flower colour is white. Tolerates quite a bit of sun, but not harsh midday sun in summer.
