Belgium is known for its exceptional nurseries, gardens, gardeners and landscapers. One of the most beautiful gems is rose nursery Lens Roses, a charming ambassador who brings roses all over the world.<\/p>\n

The story begins in 1870 in Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Waver near Mechelen, with the founding of the 'Grandes P\u00e9pini\u00e8res et Roseraies Louis Lens'. The company would eventually span several generations. Founder Louis started cultivating trees, shrubs and roses. His son Victor continued the work and started crossing roses. He wanted to create cut flowers that smelled good, as was the fashion at the time. This is how his 'Ville de Malines', 'Cardinal Mercier', 'Princesse Jos\u00e9phine Charlotte' or 'Madame Louis Lens' came into being.<\/p>\n

The company soon became the place to be. Lens grew all the most interesting roses of the moment and unconcerned sent them all over Europe, to private individuals and growers in England, Germany, France or Italy. The Second World War, however, put an end to this formidable momentum. The company was sadly shut down. Four years later, the entire collection is lost. In order to make a new start, Victor sent his son Louis junior to collect grafting material in Belgium and Great Britain... A new beginning for Louis Lens' rose nursery.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Poetic and modest<\/strong><\/p>\n

Louis junior, a scientist with a passion for mathematics and astronomy, has to give up his studies to join the adventure. He immediately sets to work. From 1947, on the advice of his parents, he started crossing new roses. After all, after the war, tastes changed. Lovers now want modern roses, in unicoloured, sometimes showy borders full of large-flowered shrubs. Mainly large-flowered tea hybrids and spray roses, Floribunda and Polyantha. In 1963, the grandiose 'Pascali', a cross with the famous hybrid tea rose 'Queen Elisabeth', caused fireworks. Because of its exceptional qualities: health, flower shape and white colour, 'Pascali' wins the largest collection of medals and later also receives the unique distinction of \"World top rose 1991\".<\/p>\n

Opgetogen over dat eerste succes blijft Louis verder kruisen met meer natuurlijke rozen, die hem beter liggen. Moschatahybriden \u2013 afkomstig uit een lijn van R. moschata<\/em>, Noisette-rozen en Rosa multiflora \u2013<\/em>zijn losse struikrozen met bloemen in trossen. Deze groep werd in 1913 in Engeland ontwikkeld door dominee Joseph Pemberton en telt bekende vari\u00ebteiten als \u2018Penelope\u2019, \u2018Cornelia\u2019 of \u2018Felicia\u2019. Louis werkt het liefst met deze sierlijke en geurige rozelaars, die ook heel bloeirijk en sterk zijn. Net als Pemberton gebruikt hij de roos \u2018Trier\u2019\u2013 in 1904 veredeld door Peter Lambert \u2013 met geurige dubbele roomwitte bloempjes met een gele tint. Deze roos ligt aan de oorsprong van heel veel moschatahybriden.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Wanneer hij die kruist met R. chinensis<\/em> \u2018Mutabilis\u2019, een moeilijke gok, verkrijgt hij de verrukkelijke \u2018Plaisanterie\u2019, met bloemen die de hele bloeitijd door van kleur veranderen : oranje in de knop, zacht geel bij het ontluiken, daarna roze en eindigend in donkerroze tot bijna violet. Geleidelijk aan wordt Louis DE specialist van unieke kruisingen, ingaand tegen de meeste veredelaars die voornamelijk met de grootbloemige klassieke theehybriden, en trosrozen blijven werken. De hele wereld benijdt hem om zijn verfijnde \u2018Guirlande d\u2019Amour\u2019, \u2018Pleine de Gr\u00e2ce\u2019, \u2018Bouquet Parfait\u2019 of zijn eerbetoon aan virtuozen en componisten als \u2018Ravel\u2019, \u2018Schubert\u2019, \u2018Sibelius\u2019, \u2018Puccini\u2019, \u2018Paganini\u2019 of \u2018Verdi\u2019. Zijn kwekerij is een echte schatkamer, met een ongelooflijke collectie botanische rozen die soms zelfs in situ<\/em> verdwenen waren. Zijn bekende \u2018Rush\u2019, afstammend van Rosa multiflora<\/em>, heeft de groeikracht van een wilde roos in combinatie met een aanhoudende bloei tot de vorst\u2026<\/p>\n

Louis Lens found a successor for his nursery with the Rudy and Anne Velle-Boudolf family in Oudenburg. Anne has been crossing and breeding following the example of the master since 1992. Her works include 'Dinky', 'Jean St\u00e9phenne', 'Gaard um Tiizenbierg' and 'Caroline's Heart'. Lens Roses is respected and loved in Belgium and all over the world.
