Siege engines pull<\/strong><\/p>\n Increasing numbers of growers and garden centres are opting for organic plants, but in doing so they encounter the inevitable pest insects. When spraying is no longer permitted, how do you deal with that? \u2018Attracting natural enemies in a built-up environment is quite difficult. If, for example, you want hoverflies, you will also have to keep them.\u2019<\/p>\n Therefore it is important to create the right conditions. Hans therefore devised the stepping stones<\/em>. These are large tubs containing a mixture of cow parsley, wild carrot, parsnip, dill and fennel. These umbellifers attract a lot of insects. \u2018This allows you to create a kind of corridor to lure natural enemies into the nursery or garden centre.\u2019<\/p>\n If you have aphids early in the season, they are dealt with by all kinds of other animals. They all come to that plant because there are aphids on it. \u2018As soon as you have aphids, you are subsequently also protected from other pests such as red spider mite and thrips. The hatched hoverfly or lacewing larvae tackle prey that matches their size. When the small aphids have gone, they move on to other small things like red spider mites and thrips.\u2019<\/p>\n Strong roses with bugs<\/strong><\/p>\n If a rose really becomes completely covered in aphids, then something else is amiss. Often it is very simple; the wrong location. \u2018If a rose is in too dry a spot, for example, it cannot take up its fertiliser and then its resistance declines. It becomes ill and does not have good resistance against the aphids. That is how you really go from bad to worse, simply because the rose is too dry. If it is too wet, then the root hairs close up and it doesn't take up nutrients either.\u2019<\/p>\n \u2018The most important thing our sector can do is to stop cultivating varieties that easily get sick. It is madness that \u2018Sneeuwwitje\u2019, the best-selling garden rose, is still being cultivated. That rose is simply sick, it needs pesticides to survive. The most common diseases on roses are rust and mildew. Choose varieties that are not bothered by them.\u2019<\/p>\n \u2018We work with the healthiest rose varieties in existence. The moment I find a better one, I replace it. We are constantly testing new varieties by completely neglecting them in a pot for two years. We let them dry out and don't remove any weeds.
