Originally this garden was arranged in tiny parterres each containing a single type of vegetable. But the upkeep was so labour intensive that now only the outside hedging has been retained. Large areas have now been opened up to grow hundreds of varieties, where flowers and vegetables flourish together. Asparagus with its bolted seeds weeping their burden almost to the ground. Dahlias blooming between purple-headed artichokes, white raspberries, cardoon and cosmos. Chard "Rod Steel", its bold scarlet stems outdazzling its quiet neighbour, the white variety "Warmoes". Sea kale, dill and big blue cabbages (each one would fill your arms) grow in their lines beside dwarf French beans and rows of sunflowers.
